Status 116

Definition

116: The file is owned by another Microkernel engine acting as a Gateway

The MicroKernel cannot contact the engine running on the gateway computer even though it can read the locator file. This might occur the following reasons: … (Continued within the Pervasive Help File)

Status 116 on file Master.btr (Solution 1)

Problem

Customer could not open System Five from 1 client terminal.

Troubleshooting steps

  1. Examined existing configuration and discovered that the installation does not conform to our current standards.
  2. This station was set up as a workstation and had use local microkernal engine enabled.

Causes

  • This error was specifically caused by the Microkernal engine trying to access the files and being refused after asking the server to open a pervasive database connection and not getting a response.
  • The overall error was caused by the firewall on the server having been configured to block TCP/IP traffic from the client PC.
Resolution

After turning off the use local microkernal engine setting the error message no longer occured, but the problem still existed. After continuing further Troubleshooting steps involved with network configuration, we turned off the Firewall and everything worked.

Other Causes

In layman's terms, sometimes Windows networks can lose their sense of direction. This happens often after network configuration changes, and the result is terminals on the network that think they know where the server is, but don't.

Resolution

Manually edit the HOSTS file to force the terminal to always look for the server's IP, rather than trying to resolve the IP from the servername. WARNING: This should not be left this way, a network technician should properly set up the network so that the IP Address properly resolves to the server and re-install the pervasive client if necessary. The Host file is only a troubleshooting technique that should be removed after the fact.

  1. Locate the HOSTS file.
    • In WindowsXP, it's here: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\
  2. Edit it with Windows Notepad, and add the following information:
    • <Server IP> <ServerName>

For example:

192.168.0.10 DataServer

Note that the IP address must be the IP address of the server and not the numbers show above. On the server, open the Command Prompt and use the command ipconfig If you don't know which computer is the server, then stop and call someone for help.

Also, do not try to edit the file with Wordpad or Microsoft Word or other word process. Only use Notepad or an editor that does not add special formatting characters as they can screw up the file.
